Hybrid Car Tax Credits Going Fast!
Posted on February 7, 2009 by Marc Goodin The federal credit to encourage hybrids phases out as automakers sells more of them. Toyota and Honda long ago passed the 60,000 sales trigger, so their hybrids get no credit. Ford says the 2010 Fusion hybrid qualifies fr a $3,400 tax credit but only if you buy one by march 32, 2009. Ford has sold enough hybrids that the buyers credit on a hybrid Fussion or Milan sedan or escape or Mariner SUV halves to $1,00 on April 1. Bewares that taxpayers hit by the Alternative Minimum Tax will get little or no credit. You can find a list of vehicles that Qualify and the size of the tax credit at www.fueleconomy.gov The recession has taken its toll on hybrid sales. The recent drop in gas from $4 to $2 a gallon may have also had an effect. We have such short memories. Its only a matter of time before gas goes back up.
Here is a couple of ways to save on gas: Yearly Savings Ease up on aggressive driving– $400 Take junk out of trunk — extras 100lbs saves $30 Tune up, tire pressure, oil change $348
Replace you 20 mpg gallon car with a 30 mpg car and save another $550 a year. You don’t even have to buy a hybrid. A Toyota Corolla and Honda Fit both will deliver 30 mph.
Cut your commute, even one day a week can make a difference. A reduction of 3,120 miles a year can save you $200 a year. Plus you get to go to work in your PJ’s haha. go green, save gas, save money.
Winter Salt Alternatives Posted on February 4, 2009 by Marc Goodin I went to Home Depot here in Connecticut just before last nights snow to get a bag of snow melt but the many pallets of salt I saw there last month were all gone - they were out of salt due to last weeks ice and snow storm. I am happy to say I missed, because I was in Florida. I was looking forward to studying the types of salt/snow melt they have. Salt and other deicer compounds can damage or kill vegetation, contaminate groundwater and be toxic to humans, animals and fish life. Last month I brought a couple of bags of salt to the office when we were out. Our office manager had also ordered “green snow melt” Since it was on sale, $8.00 for 50 pounds (delivered no less) it was cheaper than the bad salt.
Green Ice Melt
But how do you know what is good and whats bad? Here are the typical options: Salt ( Sodium Chloride - NaCL), also know as rock salt, is the most commonly used deicing product due to its low cost and effectiveness. Sodium Chloride will work at temperatures as low as -7 F but is most effective at 10-15F Calcium Chloride (CaCL2) this is a more expensive alternative than Sodium Chloride but works at temperatures as low as -60F Calcium Magnesium Acctate (CMA) is a frequently used alternative to Sodium Chloride. It is most effective at 20-25F. Calcium Magnesium Accetate does the least damage to the environment with little effects on vegitation. Often deicing materails are blended products of all three of the above compounds but typically are lower in Sodium Chloride. Alternates to Sodium Chloride also help preserve sidewalks and metal building. It is less expensive to use sand, which provides temporary traction but does not melt the snow or ice. go salt free - read the bag & get the good stuff - I will from now on. Marc
