web design
What is web design? If you are reading this we will assume that you know what the Internet is, what a web page is, what a link is, and how to navigate from web site to web site. You may, however, be wondering exactly how web pages are designed. What skills are required? What software is required? And how do you design an effective web site. We hope to answer these questions on this page.
Basic Steps of Web DesignWhen a web designer begins to design a web site they usually follow these basic steps.
- Determine what pages will be needed on the web site
- Determine how many navigation sections will be needed to navigate the site
- Determine how much room and how many sections will be needed to display the desired content (text, pictures, video, etc.)
- Decide on a style that works with the goals of the web site
- Design the site (usually in a graphic program first, but not always)
- Build out the pages and add the content required for each page
Designing for the PurposeA good web designer will know how to create a design that meets the purpose of the site. Different designs work well for different purposes.
- Attract New Customers: If the purpose of a web site is to attract new customers, then the designer can not ignore the influence of search engines on the design. Search engines are the #1 way people find web site by far. In order for a web site to be indexed properly so that search engines can find it the design much be search engine friendly. This means well organized text content and a good range of pages (versus squishing everything onto a few pages)
- Turn Visitors Into Customers: If a web site's purpose is to convert website visitors to customers then the design must be attractive and easy to use. This usually means a nice graphical interface and easy to use navigation features. It also means having enough information on the site organized in the right way so that users stay on the site and trust it as a source for what they are looking for. Interactivity also helps keep visitors on the site and increases their likelyhood of returning to the site.
- Provide a Service to Customers: Sometimes it is more important to service your existing customers than it is to just attract new customers. This type of site requires a design that helps customers find what they are looking for quickly and easily. The design should be very interactive and intuitive and should include lots of interactivity.
